The report consists of two questions. The first question is: why do city marketing strategies, that set out to differentiate cities, end up marketing all cities the same? The second question is why do iconic historic cities, such as Venice and Cambridge struggle to cope with the pressure that tourism puts on their resources?

In order to achieve the aim of this essay, the case study of Scottish Highlands in the light of national newspapers, weekend newspaper travel supplements, brochures, and travel guides has been used. The analysis highlights the 'authentic' experience projection; cultural and social construction of space; and marginality associated with this tourist spot in the printed media.
