C/EN/13. Literature review on lime-kaolin stabilised soil in road construction

(2008, 5000 words)

The paper examines the applications of Lime and Kaolin in soil stabilisation (SS) in road construction reviewing theoretical approaches to the aims of SS, soil improvement methods, the mechanisms of lime stabilisation of soil, the factors affecting lime SS, the structural performance and testing of stabilised soil, International SS standards, etc.

C/HR/269. Roles of the Architect and the Quantity Surveyor in the current built environment

(2008, 2600 words)

The paper evaluates the skills required of a lead consultant on a construction project comparing the responsibilities of the architect and quantity surveyor. Their roles are discussed in the context of a case study of the Contract Z16P200 Roads and Infrastructure Part-A in Dubai Festival City, UAE.

S/EN/28. Designing earthquake-resistant buildings

(2007, 3500 words)

The paper reports on the design of an earthquake-resistant two-storey reinforced concrete hospital presenting the dimensions of the building, the seismic design spectrum, the simplified spectrum analysis, the structural regularity, etc. The modes of structural failure in earthquakes are examined.

S/HR/122. PROFESSIONALISM IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

(2006, 1500 words)

The paper examines the concept of professionalism with reference to a professional civil engineer. The issues of ethics and sustainability related to the profession of a civil engineer are discussed.

S/EN/25. Manufacturing Dissertation: Rapid Prototyping in Engineering Research and Development

(2005, 3700 words)

This paper gives an introduction rapid prototyping, then moves on to look at the use of rapid prototyping in both engineering research and development. The rest of the paper looks into the use of rapid prototyping in the house construction industry. This includes investigation into current construction, and current rapid prototyping development in the house construction market. The use of rapid prototyping for house construction is then further analysed including looking at all modern methods for rapid prototyping, cost and accuracy are analysed, and conclusions drawn. The paper is fully referenced.

P/EN/22. Meshing portal frame structure

(2006, 907 words)

The paper reports on the ways of meshing portal frame structure using different types of mesh to analyse a structure and comparing the results for regular and irregular meshes focusing on mesh density.

E/EN/10. Designing communication tower: engineering and economic considerations

(2005, 1500 words)

The paper looks at the construction of communication towers in various parts of the world examining environmental conditions of each location to make engineering and economic suggestions about the building material, protection against corrosion, height, price, etc.

S/EN/17. An investigation into the causes, effects and subsequent steps required to inhibit the alkali silica reaction in concrete

(2003, 1800 words)

The alkali silica reaction that so often occurs in concrete is a heterogeneous chemical reaction between the alkaline content of the cement and/or water and whatever siliceous aggregates are in the overall mix. Conditions not only require silica and high alkalinity present, but also hydroxyl ions. Hydroxyl ions penetrate the surface of the aggregate and in doing so free silicon molecules by breaking silica ƒ oxygen bonds. The aggregates with high siliceous content will, when placed in an alkaline solution of around 0.60 % or above, and in the presence of water and hydroxyl ions form into a gel like substance. Due to the influx of negative hydroxyl ions, positive sodium, potassium and calcium ions also join the site to maintain electro neutrality. This report investigates this phenomenon and gives methods of prevention, examples are given.

S/EN/16. Plastic collapse of a portal frame

(2003, 1500 words)

The aim of this experiment is to examine how structures behave in reality and to see how the physical experiment compares with theoretical outcomes. The apparatus comprises a loading rig into which has been clamped a model portal frame made of a 6 mmˆ2 mild steel section. The loading system is provided by a system of pulleys and strings which are designed to apply a vertical load at the centre of the beam and a horizontal load of equal magnitude at the top of one column. The static indeterminacy, plastic moment and number/location of the plastic hinges are all determined. External work is commented upon, along with deflection vs. load. Finally conclusions and evaluations are drawn.

S/EN/11. Concrete Mix Design

(2003, 4000 words)

An analysis of the design of a concrete mix with proposed design strength of 40 N/mmˆ2 after 28 days. The design is estimated using Calcrete software, and also by manual calculations. The results are discussed in detail, followed by detailed calculations providing an equation relating concrete strength with time of set.
