This dissertation examined the motivations, advantages and disadvantages surrounding the practice of outsourcing. In so doing, the dissertation highlighted how these motivations, advantages and disadvantages varied considerably depending on the type of outsourcing arrangement: out-tasking, functional sourcing, vertical sourcing, and integrating outsourcing. The research showed how the future of outsourcing lies mainly in the use of e-marketplaces. As such, primary research was conducted to examine how these e-marketplaces enable firms to engage in outsourcing. More specifically, the research examined the risks and rewards from using e-marketplaces as an outsourcing platform. In the literature review, each of the main types of outsourcing were identified and discussed in detail. The research approach adopted was then highlighted, in terms of the research philosophy adopted, case study approach used, and research methods employed. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to identify some of the choices that firms face when engaging in outsourcing. From this research it was possible to identify how e-marketplaces minimised buyer's risks whilst increasing their potential rewards. The dissertation investigates the features of strategic business management by family business owners. The review of academic literature touches upon the theory of strategic management, the issues of family businesses, small and medium enterprises (SME), etc. A hypothesis is developed about the relationship between the firm's recognition of the importance of strategic management and their actual intention to use it. Research methods include primary data analysis obtained through questionnaires, surveys and tests, and the analysis of secondary sources, both qualitative and quantitative. Conclusions are made about the correlation between business requirements and the interests of family related stakeholders in strategic planning.

This is the first step of research to gain a better understanding of small and medium-sized firms' managers' attitude towards electronic marketing.
