This dissertation investigates whether the role of the Head Teacher is to be administrator, manager or leader. Literature is reviewed on the definitions of administrator, manager and leader. The roles and responsibilities of the head teacher in the last few decades are discussed arguing that the head teacher is sometimes an administrator, at other times a manager and a leader. Primary research is conducted through a questionnaire and field survey. Conclusions are made about the role of the head teacher; recommendations are suggested on the basis of the findings.
The dissertation investigates the marketing of education in the UK from the perspective of social science providing a review of literature on the concepts of market system, education system, the system of social policy in the UK, the concept of 'marketisation', the social history of the British education after WW2, etc. The methods of qualitative research are used on the basis of secondary data analysis comparing two periods of the UK social history, i.e. 1944-56 and 2000-2008. Conclusions are made about the changes in the education system across these periods and the driving forces behind these changes.

The dissertation investigates the results of the restructuring of the Chilean educational system in the 1970s-1980s describing its main features and examining the outcomes of the reform for pre-school, primary, secondary and higher education. Social and economic inequalities associated with the education system are discussed drawing comparisons with the French educational system and analysing the ways of addressing the problem of inequality in France. Conclusions are made about the weaknesses of reforms in both countries and the strengths of the French system that contributed to the positive outcomes of the Chilean education reform in reducing economic disparity.
