The dissertation proposes research into the effects of redundancy on employees in the UK exploring whether current legislation gives employers or employees an advantage. A review of literature is presented to indicate that for employers, redundancy can be used as a strategic tool to ensure that the firm remains flexible; for employees, redundancy can be a stressful period creating job insecurity. Although theoretically the law protects employees from unfair dismissal resulting from redundancy, the research seeks to define whether this happens in practice, using primary methods of data collection, i.e. interviews with managers, employees, trade union members and lawyers.
The dissertation examines the legal right of the police to stop and search an individual regulated by the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE). Literature is reviewed on the application of PACE with reference to ethnic minorities discussing institutional racism, "cop culture", etc. A study of the Middlesbrough police is conducted to evaluate whether their stop and search practices are discriminatory in nature. Quantitative methods of research are applied based on primary data (obtained through questionnaires) and secondary data. Conclusions are made about the police practices of stop and searches towards certain groups in the Middlesbrough area.
The dissertation investigates women's rights in Muslim environment presenting a review of literature on Islamic religion, Muslim culture, Quaranic views on women and gender relations, Islamic family law on marriage, inheritance, divorce, etc. The rights of Muslim women to divorce and re-marry are considered with references to different Muslim communities with a focus on Iran. The research is based on secondary data analysis. Conclusions are made about the positive changes in female subordination under Islam family law.
