The work discusses at length the problems that EU will be facing in the future with regards to energy. It is pointed out that the supply is not only limited but also increasingly volatile which can lead to another OPEC incident in the future. It is also shown that none of the alternatives that are currently available can be used as a substitute for oil. It is argued that building nuclear power stations is not only dangerous but is a very short term solutions since the supply of uranium is likely to run out by 2020 and the prices are likely to rise. Therefore it is proposed that the EU countries should put more effort and investment into research and development of an alternative/substitute for oil, as this will be the only way of solving the emerging problem.

The context of any business environment is subject to various changes. It can be described as fluid and dynamic, and potentially quite volatile. In May 2004 the EU is expected to finalise the scheduled enlargement process with the corresponding admission of ten new members. It is widely discussed that the process of enlargement will introduce specific changes into business environment of current EU members-states (Mercado et al, 2001; Percival-Straunik, 2003; Babetskii et al, 2004). Though analysts are not unanimous about the direction and the nature of changes, they share the opinion that the changes will cover various factors that determine the business environment. These factors include economical, political, legal, social and technological ones. The current paper is going to review each of the above-mentioned factors in order to draw the comprehensive picture about the possible impact of the changes on the strategic context of the hotel. The paper will start with the analysis of the current environmental situation in the EU, in order to outline existing factors that affect the environmental changes. Basing on the various sources it will then discuss the possible impacts of the accession on the hotel in terms of macroeconomic stability, business opportunities and consumer trends.
