C/N/646. Dissertation. Can damaged sedimentary rocks cause man made earthquakes
- WORDS:
- 9450
- DATE:
- 2011
- PRICE:
- 99.99 GBP
This dissertation aims to examine whether damaged sedimentary rocks can cause manmade earthquakes. The dissertation aims to investigate the extent to which sedimentary rocks are damaged by subsea oil and gas extraction, to examine the nature and development of sedimentary rocks, to explore the relationship between sedimentary rocks and earthquakes and tectonic compression, and to scrutinize the microscopic behaviour of sediments and their relationship to fracture patterns. The review of literature explores oil and gas and the affects they can have on sedimentary rocks. The paper then discusses the methodology used within the study, as well as the research philosophy and approach. The study then critically examines a wide range of topics. The theory relating to the geology of sedimentary rocks in petrology is examined in great detail. The dissertation then introduces and evaluates two case studies, the Graben region of the North Sea (UK Off-shore oil field) and the Off- shore oil field of Kashagan in Kazakhstan. Conclusions are made regarding Tierney’s risk assessment.

S/N/294. Land degradation and soil erosion in the Sorbas basin: are humans to blame?
- WORDS:
- 6450
- DATE:
- 2010
- PRICE:
- 69.99 GBP
This report focuses on calculating a relative and then absolute date for the terraces in this region of South East Spain, enabling to establish whether human beings have been responsible for soil degradation on the land mass. On the assumption that the anthropogenic land degradation would have only significantly occurred in the last 5000 years, this is the time period that the paper studies. The hypothesis that erosion could be due to a natural process, highly erosive rocks and a harsh climate is mooted. The report focuses on collecting and analysing sets of soil and landscape characteristics in order to answer this hypothesis.
KEYWORDS: Land degradation, soil erosion, sorbas basin, anthropogenic, geology, environment!,
S/N/290. Introduction to thin section micromorphology for geoarchaeological investigation.
- WORDS:
- 3000
- DATE:
- 2010
- PRICE:
- 39.99 GBP
This report investigates two Neolithic sites on the West Mainland of Orkney (Skara Brae and Ness of Brodga) using thin section micromorphology, one of the main methods of geoarcheological research used in the North Atlantic. Records of the past landscape and the historical environmental and cultural data relevant to the area are also incorporated in order to interpret the findings on the sediment make-up and archaeological significance of the sites. Their similarities and differences are compared.
KEYWORDS: Archaeology, geology, thin section micromorphology, geoarchaeology, archaeology!,
S/N/254. GIS project as visualisation tool to chart the recent development of Formby area and appending future in next 25 years
