The paper addresses the issue of floodplain management and the concerns raised in both the developed and developing world. Identifying that arable farming in the developed world is no longer small multi–crop production, but a highly intense mono–crop culture with large combine harvester fields and excessive artificial fertiliser usage, not only is the intensive farmland heavily drained but it has been ploughed intensively resulting in channelisation. The essay examines the potential implications of the increase in ploughing and the removal of hedgerows, reduction of natural recharging of aquifers and the problem of eutrophic water bodies and the work of Sustainable Drainage Sytems (SUDS).
