F.A.C.T. (Flood Action Consultancy Team) is an independent consultancy team of environmental scientists, hydrologists and conservationists, specialising in managing flooding problems, with additional skills in information technology, presentation performance and team work. The paper outlines a recent project to reduce flooding in Lingstir on the river Avon. The area has been subject to flooding since medieval times, with two recent major floods which caused social, environmental and economical impacts for the whole community. The team examine options for short and long term damage limitation, including rail track closures, increased road sign warnings, alerting emergency services and an emergency action plan for residents, along with recommendations for flood defence products for homes and businesses, debris clearance and river widening.
