An assessment of the success of the reclamation of the open cast coal mine, Roughcastle, near Falkirk, Scotland, now referred to as Roughcastle community woodland. No longer in use as a mine, and economically non-viable, the decision was taken to develop the land. The methodology used to assess how this transition had progressed includes on site sampling, foliage density and hydro measurements and a lab assessment of phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and pH levels of the soil and statistical comparisons of open soil to woodland soil. The types of trees that would benefit further development is discussed.
