The paper discusses how the hard engineering of problem areas susceptible to flooding is now increasingly being addressed using Natural Flood Management. It goes on to explain how this switch in the maintenance of the environment in the UK has also benefited such aspects as tourism and the development of green spaces, biodiversity and habitats, and the aesthetic view of the protected areas. Whilst acknowledging that Natural Flood Management is beneficial in the regeneration of woodlands, wetland and peat land recreation, it purports that hard engineering still has a place in the United Kingdom, though ideally on a limited scale.
