C/N/287. Antimicrobial Potential of Silver: Critical Analysis

The paper points out that conventional antimicrobial agents are becoming increasingly less effective in dealing with infections due to the development of resistance, which enhances the interest in developing new antimicrobial therapies to treat infectious diseases. The study examines the evidence to suggest that silver, either as compounds, as nanoparticles or in metallic form, could be useful as an antimicrobial agent. The mechanism of action of silver is discussed, clinical evidence from the studies of silver preparations is analysed, the potential for microbial resistance to develop through the use of silver and its clinical implications are considered.
