The dissertation looks into the theory and practices of lean manufacturing. The review of literature touches on the approaches to the manufacturing process, the concepts of ‘push and pull’ manufacturing, total quality management (TQM), innovation, lean thinking (LT), LT benefits and challenges, etc. A case study is conducted to identify the obstacles faced by UK organisations in the process of integrating lean thinking in their supply-chains. The methods of the research are based on secondary data collected from academic sources on the topics of lean thinking, TQM, incremental process innovation, etc. The global dynamics of the manufacturing process are analyzed considering the impacts of the economic downturn and arguing whether manufacturers should rely entirely on lean thinking in contemporary business environment. Examples of LT application in Toyota are analyzed, the obstacles of LT for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in the UK are examined. Conclusions are made about the challenges of LT for SME that involve operational risks.
