The dissertation looks at innovation and entrepreneurship as key sources of competitive strengths in UK techno-based SMEs seeking to identify whether they should be pioneers or followers in their innovation strategies. Strategic content of pioneers and followers is identified highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each mode and formulating related managerial requirements. Literature is reviewed on the theory of strategic management and innovation, the concepts of leadership and followership, the issues of innovation in SME, etc. The methods of the research are built on the interpretivist approach and a case study analysing primary data collected from 60 questionnaires distributed among the owners and top managers of techno-based SMEs. Conclusions are made about the managerial implications of the research findings suggesting recommendations to SME about the adoption of one of the analysed innovation strategies.
