This paper aims to examine the way in which Chinese and South Korean filmmakers use cinema to look at the influence of modernity of traditional values and lifestyles. The paper examines many films in order to achieve its objectives, and the films are discusse in reference to settings, plot, and genre. Some of the films examined are Lou Ye’s Suzhou he, Zhang Yuan’s East Palace, West Palace, Chen Kaige’s Yellow Earth, Jung Ji-Woo’s Happy End, Bong Joon-ho’s The Host, Park Chan-Wook’s The Vengeance Trilogy, Kang Je-Gyu’s Shiri, and Zhang Yimou’s To Live. Conclusions are made regarding the ways in which the films address modernity.
