This paper discusses the history of Hollywood film making, focusing on the 1960’s where there was a decline in the Hollywood studios, creating the Hollywood New Wave movement. Examination of a variety of films of this period is discussed, in relation to the departure from classical Hollywood. The way in which the New Hollywood era depicted American culture the 1960’s and 1970’s is evaluated, and contextualises what was happening in American culture at the time. The social upheaval at the time called for low budget films that were unique, had individual creative vision, and attracted society at the time.
