The paper looks at the impact that Hong Kong cinema has had on Hollywood and global cinema. The research argues that local directors and choreographers have had the opportunity to make their work known to larger audiences as a result of the Hollywood link, but suggests that American/Western norms are still prevalent – with a reluctance by Hollywood to accept a greatest presence of Asian actors and actresses. The paper charts the rise and popularity of Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu films during the early 1970s, and subsequently, those of Jackie Chan. The impact of titles Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Hero (2002) and House of Flying Daggers (2004) is noted, especially with regard to the fact that the productions have shown greater artistic respect for the Asian aesthetic. Meanwhile, the astonishing special effects used in The Matrix (1999), directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski and in Romeo Must Die (2000), directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak have created a new kind of hero – distinctly Asian in its cultural origin.
