This paper examines the development of superheroes in popular American culture over the last century. It shows how the characteristics and traits of superheroes have evolved as the needs of society demand more complex and ambiguous role models. The part that the film industry has played in bringing them to a wider audience is discussed. It aims to show that popular superheroes have remained closely connected to issues in mainstream culture and have provided the mechanisms whereby people have dealt with contemporary issues. There is also discussion around the move from the attainment of perfection, to acceptance of limitations and flaws, making heroes more realistic and relatable.
