The paper reviews theoretical approaches to strategy comparing the resource-based view (RBV) of Hamel and Prahalad with Michael Porters positioning–based view (PBV) of strategy. Both theories are described and applied to the analysis of the Japanese electronics industry. The benefits and limitations of RBV and PBV are highlighted.
