The paper addresses the issues of managerial creativity, innovation and decision making highlighting the features needed by a good manager, i.e. lateral thinking, the art of ‘reading and understanding', the importance of critical thinking and SWOT analysis as a basis for strategic decision, etc. The use of metaphors in the managerial process is discussed describing organisations as machines, brains, etc. The use of these concepts by managers in various sectors is examined using primary research techniques (interviews).
