The paper examines theories of attributes, attributions, behaviours, situational leadership, transformational and transactional leadership – with reference to the case study of Mala Karasu, a specialist in the care of older people at Guys and St Thomas' NHS Trust. The research discusses how Mala exhibits transformational leadership in her passion for communicating a vision, and with reference to Covey's (1989) seven habits of highly-effective people, it is shown how Mala has reached stage seven – which means addressing the new challenges facing the organisation. The paper discusses how the first wave of raising awareness and changing practice has been dealt with – the Trust now addressing more complex targets, thus requiring Mala to provide and drive the strategy to achieve them. Reference is also made to Covey's (1989) description of interdependence. In creating a new vision for staff, Mala may need to incorporate a more interactive approach among staff.
