The paper examines the need for leadership in the nursing profession, and suggests a link between the problems of recruitment and a perceived dearth of leadership. The paper defines leadership – servanthood, drive, knowledge, confidence, sensitivity, effective communication skills, adaptability and vision – and relates those definitions to nursing. The NHS Leadership Qualities Framework (2002) is discussed at some length. The research also highlights how imperative it is for health service leaders to have systems in place for the broad scanning of the quality of health care now being offered to patients – such scanning being an essential part of service improvement and effective leadership.
