The dissertation addresses the issues of risk management and disaster recovery management presenting a case study of the British Petroleum (BP) oil spill disaster caused by the detonation of the oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. Literature is reviewed on BP details, disaster facts and consequences, risk management theory, management of disaster recovery, etc. The methodology of the research is based on the qualitative analysis of secondary data and a case study approach including primary data obtained from interviews with BP personnel. Conclusions are made about the causes and impacts of the Deepwater Horizon accident at environmental, industrial and managerial levels. Recommendations are suggested about possible improvements in project environment and risk management at BP.
