This paper examines the concept of authority in La Chastelaine de Vergy (13th century), and examines the text in reference to Gaunt’s Gender and Genre in Medieval Literature (1995). The paper aims to explore the way in which the tale shows authority to be regulated by desire and social standing. The way in which women’s authority is greater than men’s in the tale is also examined. The paper concludes by summarising the relationship between authority, gender, love and social standing.
