S/LI/388. Review of Barnes' “Flaubert's Parrot”

WORDS:
3100
DATE:
2009
PRICE:
39.99 GBP

The paper reviews the book by Julian Barnes “Flaubert's Parrot” devoted to the French novelist Gustave Flaubert and the interpretation of his writing by an amateur scholar who reflects on the objectivity of Flaubert's biographical portrayal and the possibility to reveal the “truth” of Flaubert's life. Barnes' ideas and narrative techniques are discussed arguing whether the author can be considered as a God, and whether literary criticism can destroy the beauty of the novel by trying to explain it to the public.
