The paper analyses the features of the fictional island of Utopia that are based on Thomas More’s travels arguing that cultural and geographical discoveries imply the learning of new concepts that can be applied to improve social life in the home country. More’s use of his travel experiences is compared to that of Jean de Léry in his “History of a Voyage to the Land of Brazil, Also Called America” and the attempts to achieve religious freedom through his voyages of discovery.
