The paper examines the features of the American movement of the 19th century known as New England transcendentalism discussing the ideas of Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed in his essays, and the philosophy of Henry-David Thoreau expressed in his novel “Walden”. The conception of nature as a source of knowledge and benefits for humans is discussed. Critiques of the two philosophers are reviewed arguing what constitutes the 'necessaries of life' for human beings.
