The paper addresses a contentious issue of the parents’ right to smack children discussing the difference between normal family discipline and domestic violence leading to mental and emotional child abuse, and arguing whether the removal of affection can create a deeper distress in a child than smacking. Cultural aspects of corporal punishment are considered concluding that the government needs to establish criteria for fair and reasonable punishment as a form of discipline in children.
