Beginning with a brief contextualisation of the French sociologist, anthropologist and philosopher's background, the paper outlines Bourdieu's three forms of the theory of ‘cultural capital': embodied, objectified and the institutionalised state and how these relate to cultural, social and economic capital within society as a way of defining class. Using educational achievement as an example, the essay aims to highlight the shortcomings of Bourdieu's theory.
