Outlining Weber's four theories of rationality: practical, theoretical, substantive and formal, the paper assesses the validity and relevance of the hypotheses in modern society. Bureaucracy is described as the foundation for formal rationality which again has subcategories of: efficiency (the quickest and most effective way of achieving the goal), predictability (looking for the same outcome every time), calculation (what are the cost benefits that can be had), irrationality and rationality and finally technology and its uses. The paper draws on Ritzer's “McDonaldisation Thesis” which applies Weber's original formal rationality to the modern world using the fast-food chain as his example.
