This paper examines the reasons why someone may confess to a crime that they did not commit. The ways in which false confessions are obtained are discussed, as well as the risks that these confessions can have on the innocent. The validity of these kinds of confessions is assessed, along with the psychological factors regarding false confessions. The way in which false confessions can be obtained by force and manipulation by the police, as well as the way in which a judge or jury can sometimes fail to spot a false confession. The paper examines a variety of theories and literature on the subject before conclusions are made.
