This dissertation focuses on exploring the differences between the way in which elderly offenders are represented in the media in comparison to young offenders. The study discusses the relationship between crime and the media, and examines the way in which the media depicts crime and human behaviour, as well as the role that the media plays in moral panics. The next section of the dissertation evaluates the way in which the media depicts youth offenders, and uses the example of Venables and Thompson. The study also examines the way in which children and young offenders have been portrayed in the media post 1996. The dissertation then focuses on elderly people, and the criminal justice system, as well as the concept of the elderly crime wave.
