The paper looks at the possible motivations for suicide expressed by Durkheim in his work “Suicide” discussing altruistic, egoistic, anomic, and fatalistic types of suicide. Fluctuations in suicide rates are considered with regard to different societies and different historical periods highlihgitng the role of social factors in making suicide decisions. The shortcomings of Durkheim’s theory are indicated.
