With many families living increasingly fragmented lives, the essay describes how the family meal, particularly the Sunday roast, has become more important than ever for reinforcing the family bond. Feeding is outlined as crucial to the establishment of parent-child relations and this “caring work” is cited as essential for the individual who is in need of love and affection, companionship, and acceptance as a total human being. Conversely however, studies of divorce and remarriage have found that tensions within the relationship often manifested themselves at family meals.
