This paper examines loss and bereavement in relation to current psychological and sociological theories. The paper discusses the Kubler-Ross (1970) grief model, which describes five stages to grief. Theorists such as Bowlby, Worden, and Barker are evaluated. The different reactions to grief are highlighted, like mental and physical effects. Organisations that support grief stricken people are discussed, as well as medical options for those that are suffering. The paper also presents a case study of Mrs Isa, a cancer patient, detailing the feelings of loss that she has been experiencing through her illness. Conclusions are made regarding the complexity of loss and grief.
