The dissertation examines whether verbalizing a visual memory impairs the ability to recognize the image. A case study of face recognition by eyewitnesses in crimes is conducted. Literature is reviewed on the verbal overshadowing of visual images, non verbal cognitive tasks, the mechanisms of recall, misinformation and post event information in the memory retrieval, memory conformity, etc. An experiment is conducted to identify recognition related factors. Conclusions are made about the effects of memory conformity on co-witnesses' perception of perpetrator's appearance.
