The paper reviews the theory of personality proposed by the American psychologist Eric Berne and known as transactional analysis theory (TAT). The three states of ego (i.e. the parent, adult and child) and four life positions of the individual are discussed. The limitations of the theory are outlined assessing the value of TAT from the historical perspective and comparing it to Freud’s psychoanalytic theory of the subconscious.
