The dissertation addresses the issues of deliberate self harm with relation to sex differences between various demographic groups. A literature review is presented on various aspects and approaches to self harm looking at the current situation from historical, social and clinical perspectives. Quantitative analysis is conducted to identify the differences between self harm incidence in men and women as contrasted to the differences in its incidence within other demographic groups including homosexual men and lesbian women, people in prisons, hospitals or other institutions. Treatment and prevention of self harm are examined with references to academic and clinical findings of the review. Conclusions are made about the causes and sex specific manifestations of deliberate self harm
