S/PS/219. A critical evaluation of Piaget's theory of cognitive development

WORDS:
1150
DATE:
2010
PRICE:
19.99 GBP

Piaget proposed that a child's thinking proceeds through a series of four broad developmental stages and this paper discusses the theory. The stages are: firstly, the sensori-motor stage, from birth to 2 years, the pre-operational stage, from age 2 to 7 years, the concrete operations stage, from age seven to 11-12, and finally the formal operations stage, from age 11-12 upwards. The paper shows how Piaget's theory of cognitive development is considered to be controversial – how some of the identified stages may not apply to different cultural groups, and that an individual child's development may heavily depend upon social and cultural factors. The research refers to numerous studies on developmental psychology and on the works of Beilin and Borke which evaluate Piaget's legacy.

S/PS/216. A critical analysis of the stages of drawing development as described by Luquet and Piaget

WORDS:
3000
DATE:
2010
PRICE:
39.99 GBP

The paper considers the subject of children's drawings and how their work can be viewed as an indicator of psychological development. The research assembles a large collection of literature and sources, and considers in particular the cognitive stage theory of drawing development, which originated from a theory by Luquet in 1927, and adapted by Piaget. The theory is critically analysed, firstly by an examination of Luquet and, secondly, by explaining Piaget's contribution. Luquet advances the notion of intellectual realism – representations of the world which are successful to a certain degree, as adults can recognise what the child has drawn, but are not entirely successful as the view of the object is unrealistic. The theorist, Messer, writing in 1999 indicates how such drawings represent what the child knows about an object intellectually, rather than what he or she actually sees. The paper presents an all-encompassing overview of a much-discussed area of psychological and child research.
