This paper reviews the article ‘Learning to talk. Talking to learn’ (2005) by McDonagh, which discusses the language acquisition of children, in particular speaking and listening activities. The paper focuses on how adults play a role in developing the spoken language of children. The article documents Chomsky’s Language Acquisition Device theory, and this paper rejects this view in favour of other ways in which children can be engaged in speaking and listening activities.
