The paper looks at the strategy of successful warfare described by Sun Tzu, the Chinese general and philosopher of the 6th century BC, in his work “The Art of War”. Sun Tzu’s views are compared with those of modern philosophers commenting on Sun Tzu’s understanding of intelligence and types of secret agents. The shortcomings of his typology are discussed with references to the espionage of the twentieth century.
