This paper examines the state, and argues as to whether it is unavoidable and necessary or not. The role that the state should play in regard to individuals and society is also discussed. The argument is based around three theorists, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Their opinions on the topic of the state are discussed, and the paper looks at the issue in a comparative manner. The paper concludes with a final opinion regarding the validity of the first statement.
