S/P/442. The strengths and weaknesses of the entitlement approach to famine relief
- WORDS:
- 1600
- DATE:
- 2010
- PRICE:
- 19.99 GBP
The paper examines the theory of the market-based approach to this subject, which is known as Amartya Sen's entitlement approach. The research considers the strengths and weaknesses of the theory and whether there is a case for food imports in dealing with famines in the presence of “entitlement” failure. Sen believes that famine is not caused due to deficiency of food but due to failure of entitlement. Case studies are made of notable famine situations, such as the Ethiopian famine of 1973. With no irregular reduction in food, consumption of food per head was reasonably normal as a whole for Ethiopia, but the incapacity of one province to command food from outside was the result of its low purchasing power. Literature sources include Sen's 1981 Poverty and Famines, An Essay on Entitlement and Depriviation, and papers by Devereux and Hossain which discuss its influence.
KEYWORDS: Famine, third world, aid, Sen’s entitlement theory, Ethiopia,
C/P/245. Critical evaluation of Mackinder's ideology of geopolitics
- WORDS:
- 1400
- DATE:
- 2010
- PRICE:
- 19.99 GBP
The paper evaluates Sir Halford Mackinder’s ideology of geopolitics. The concepts espoused by the British geographer in “The Geographical Pivot of History” and “Democratic Ideals and Reality” show that his ideas have influenced much of the geopolitical debate. Indeed, Mackinder’s idea of the “heartland” is still relevant and can be found at the centre of global diplomacy. The paper shows that Mackinder’s ideas found resonance after the Second World War, when he proposed a North Atlantic alliance to provide a bridgehead in France, a moated aerodrome in Britain, and a reserve of trained manpower, agriculture and industries in the eastern United States and Canada, and in the US in the 1980s after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
KEYWORDS: Geopolitics, Halford Mackinder, power-politics, heartland theory, international relations,

- WORDS:
- 3600

The paper examines whether oil trade practices can be adopted or have influenced the international trading of gas. OPEC’s role in relation to price and supply and demand is a major feature of the research, and the work also examines the negative side of cartel power – its influence over national domestic policy, for example. The possibility of the creation of a ‘Gas OPEC’ in the form of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is also considered, as is the increasing dependency of nations, such as the US, on imported gas – a situation which could lead to gas producers exerting undue influence over international relations and fixing gas prices at high rates.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID
I needed the essay just to develop an understanding of how the different ways of analysing a business are used. I am doing a similar study of a different company and so far this has been an appropriate outline for me to understand how to get around this essay. All I need to do now is research my company and hopefully follow a similar method of analysis. The service you provided was more than helpful.Tangat
