C/P/245. Critical evaluation of Mackinder's ideology of geopolitics

The paper evaluates Sir Halford Mackinder’s ideology of geopolitics. The concepts espoused by the British geographer in “The Geographical Pivot of History” and “Democratic Ideals and Reality” show that his ideas have influenced much of the geopolitical debate. Indeed, Mackinder’s idea of the “heartland” is still relevant and can be found at the centre of global diplomacy. The paper shows that Mackinder’s ideas found resonance after the Second World War, when he proposed a North Atlantic alliance to provide a bridgehead in France, a moated aerodrome in Britain, and a reserve of trained manpower, agriculture and industries in the eastern United States and Canada, and in the US in the 1980s after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
