This paper examines the extent to which political Islam (Islamisation) has had an impact on the Pakistani government and society since 1977. Military influences are assessed over the last thirty years, as well as Islamic taxes and judicial reforms. The Zia regime is discussed in detail, and the paper examines the differences between the Sunni and Shi’a sects of Islam within Pakistan. The way in which political Islam used religion to create a national identity is also assessed.
