This paper discusses the indirect realist theory of perception, and aims to assess whether it is a defensible position. The paper begins by outlining the concept of the Sense Datum Theory (SDT), and links it to the indirect realist theory of perception. The reasons why the indirect theory has been rejected by many philosophers are outlined, and the paper discusses the ‘veil of perception’ problem. Other theories examined are The Time- Lag Argument”, “The Transmission Argument”, “The Argument from Hallucination,” and “The Argument from Illusion.” The paper concludes by suggesting why it may still be seen as defensible.
