The paper looks at the concept of suicide from the perspective of sociological theories of Emile Durkheim arguing that to consider suicide as a social fact is to overlook the importance of individual choice. The works of Aristotle and Novak are reviewed recognising that Durkheim's theories are based on biased empirical research and that suicide is a more difficult concept than morality or collective consciousness.
