This paper reviews Peter Singers argument in “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” that individuals in affluent countries are morally obliged to give small amounts of the personal wealth to relieve suffering elsewhere. The paper aims to argue that whist giving to charity should be encouraged, not giving to charity should not be condemned. The paper begins by outlining aspects of Singers argument, and follows this by discussing other philosophers that have disagreed with him, and discusses the reasons why they disagree. Conclusions are made regarding whether Singers argument is right or wrong.
