The paper addresses the ethical issues of biological research (bioethics) reporting on two cases of “savoir siblings”, one involving the use of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in combination with in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), which allowed a family to choose a healthy embryo for creating a test-tube baby that would save the life of its older sister, and the other related to the tissue matching performed to the umbilical cord blood of the saviour sibling. Ethical debate about the use of medical technology in both cases is reviewed.
