This essay focuses primarily on certain staged scenarios within the context of Public International Law. In the first part of the essay, I have examined the limited rights and duties of an individual under public international law and this has been compared with the wider nature of the rights and duties afforded to states, who have historically been seen as the primary subjects of international law. In the second part of this essay, I have examined the EU approach to the recognition of states in the aftermath of the break-up of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. In the third part of this essay, I have looked at the case of the Malvinas/Falklands Islands and the different grounds under which both the UK and Argentina could use to support claims to ownership of the land. In the fourth part of the essay, I have looked at the peaceful resolution of disputes in the context of the Rainbow Warrior arbitration case between New Zealand and France, and I have also considered the consequences and remedies emanating for the arbitration. In the final part of the essay, I have looked at the use of armed force in international relations and in particular, the justification of pre-emptive force on the basis of self-defence as against terrorist actions.
